William Strong Dewey papers, 1857-1863 and 1909.

The collection includes records documenting William Dewey's time at Norwich University, including grade reports and schedules (1858-1863), receipts (1859-1863), letters (1857-1862), compositions (1859-1863) and degrees (1863 and 1909). The collection also contains Dewey's 1862 discharge from the 7th Squadron Rhode Island Cavalry as well as a brief history of this unit, which was also known as the "College Cavaliers."

William Dewey of Quechee, VT, graduated from Norwich University in 1863. Following his graduation he pursued a career in the manufacture of woolen goods. In 1862, during the Civil War, he took part in enrolling the "College Cavaliers," which became Company B, 7th Squadron, Rhode Island Volunteer Cavalry. Dewey was presented an honorary A.
